1879 Avery House
The 1879 Avery House - Fort Collins has Franklin Avery to thank for the wide streets in Fort Collins; he took advantage of the open spaces when he surveyed the town in 1873. Avery later founded First National Bank and was instrumental in developing water projects that enabled agriculture to flourish in northern Colorado.
In 1879, he and his wife Sara built a family home on the corner of Mountain Avenue and Meldrum Street and raised their children, Edgar, Ethel, and Louise, there. The original two-story home consisted of two rooms on the first floor, now the entry area and dining room; three bedrooms upstairs; and a basement. Constructed of sandstone from local quarries, the house cost $3,000 when it was built. During the ensuing years, the Avery’s added to the house several times; the final addition included the distinctive Queen Anne tower. Additional information at poudrelandmarks.org

1883 Water Works
The 1883 Fort Collins Water Works was the first major public works built in Fort Collins. It was born out of the need to provide fire protection and drinking water to a growing community. The facility is located at the western edge of Fort Collins on a 23-acre site that also features a portion of the Cherokee and Overland Trail that led gold seekers, emigrants, and outlaws through the western frontier.
The 1883 Water Works is open on the second Saturday of the month May-October from 10AM-3PM, except September which is on the third Saturday as part of the Historic Homes Tour.
Private tours may also be scheduled HERE throughout the summer.

B.H.Eaton Ditch
Benjamin Eaton (1833-1904), one of the largest land owners in Weld and Larimer counties, was instrumental in the establishment of modern irrigation farming in Northern Colorado. At one time he owned over ninety 160 acre parcels, all watered from canals and reservoirs of his own construction. This ditch currently has concrete Parshall measuring flumes with gauging stations to record water depth in the flumes.

This historic signpost marks the spot where in 1836 French fur trappers hid a large stash of gunpowder, later becoming the river’s namesake.

City of Greeley Natural Areas and Trails Division at Signature Bluffs
Greeley has nearly 2,000 acres of natural areas and over 30 miles of trails waiting for you to explore. Greeley’s natural areas are places where visitors can connect to nature in an up close and personal way. Spend the day on a bike touring the Poudre trail. Watch birds and deer along the river. Stroll through a quiet cottonwood forest with your best two or four-legged friends. The city’s natural areas are not just a great place for residents to exercise and unwind. Natural areas provide important habitat for local wildlife, assist in improving water quality, and increased resilience to floods. Council Tree
In 1860, a massive cottonwood tree stood in a broad, lush meadow near the Cache la Poudre River’s banks and served as a meeting place for Chief Friday and the Northern Arapahoe. It would later be known as the Council Tree, by white settlers who saw the tree as a symbol of Native American Life. You can now find a signpost for where the tree once stood, just north of Strauss Cabin along the trail.

Eastman Park
Eastman Park is a 25-acre turf-covered park in the Southeast Corner of Windsor. It has ample parking, indoor restrooms, drinking fountains, a play area for the children and a picnic shelter to get out of the sun. Located off of 7th Street and Eastman Park Drive north of the playground, shelter, skatepark and soccer fields is a local river adventure project unlike anything else in the Town of Windsor. The Eastman Park River Experience features a river-mile devoted to local kayaking, canoeing, tubing and water play.

Gateway Natural Area
Hidden in plain sight, the rustic park, situated at the confluence of the North Fork and the Cache la Poudre River is not to be missed. This fly-fishing destination is also home to a network of scenic trails, river put-ins, and the site of the city's historic water filtration plant. Plan an afternoon the whole family can enjoy by utilizing the grills, picnic tables, and the natural playground all along the river’s edge.

Great Western Sugar Beet Flume and Bridge
This historic remnant reminds us that Colorado once had more than 20 sugar beet factories, supporting tens of thousands of farmers, field hands, and factory workers from the early to mid-1900s. This suspension bridge is representative of a historic industrial disposal system and was placed in the National Register of Historic places in 2014.
You can access this site from the Poudre River Trail and read the interpretive signage explaining its history.

Greeley Ditch #3
Built in 1870 the Greeley No. 3 Ditch was the first cooperative irrigation development in northeastern Colorado. Its 13-mile length was dug by horses, oxen and mules, and all male residents of eligible age were enlisted to assist in its construction. Funds to pay for the building of the ditch came from membership fees while annual assessments levied on colonists raised money for operations, maintenance, and improvements. Today Greeley No. 3 continues to be a vital asset to the Greeley community.

Greeley History Museum
The Greeley History Museum showcases and preserves Greeley and Weld County’s history through permanent and temporary exhibitions, educational programs, research and collections. At the Greeley History Museum as well as Centennial village, artifacts, photographs and hands-on opportunities create a meaningful visitor experience. In addition to exhibits, the lower level of the museum holds the Hazel E. Johnson Research Center, which has an impressive collection of documentary and photographic resources available for researchers, students and genealogists.
The building, originally built in 1929 for the Greeley Tribune, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and became home to the Greeley History Museum in 2005.

Island Grove Regional Park
Trees planted as far back as 1869, spacious lawns, and a range of facilities that border the Poudre River have earned Island Grove Regional Park a reputation as one of the most picturesque and versatile events complexes in the nation. Island Grove Regional Park is a multi-use events complex owned by the City of Greeley and Weld County. Located on 145 acres (about half the total floor space of the Pentagon) means there’s plenty of space for all ages to play! The park supplies parking and access to the Poudre River and trail.

Kaplan-Hoover Bison Bone Bed
Archaic-era people of the region directed bison into the creek, or arroyo, where they were trapped, killed, and butchered. The site is one of the largest bison kill sites from the Archaic era in Colorado (8000 to 2000 BC). To date, approximately 4,000 bison bones have been recovered with an estimated 200 animals at this site. The site is located on private property, but visitors can view the site from the Poudre River Trail. While standing at the wayside sign, visitors can look across the Jodee Reservoir to view the site.

Kodak Trail Head and Watchable Wildlife Area
This section along the Cache la Poudre River is a Colorado State Wildlife area that seeks to preserve the natural riparian habitat for wildlife. It is a wonderful spot for bird watching. Here you will find wild turkeys wandering about in groups as well as eagles, hawks, and a variety of waterfowl.
Lake Canal
The Lake Canal was built in 1873 to supply irrigation water to the newly established Fort Collins Agricultural Colony. The drought of 1874 led to a system of water management that has since prevailed throughout the Western United States.The Doctrine of Prior Appropriation, or “first in time, first in right,” dictates that the person or irrigation company who first claims water from a river is the first person to receive water from the river regardless of need. The canal, now modernized, has been functioning for over 140 years.

Old Fort Collins Heritage Park
Camp Collins was officially established on August 20, 1864, and although it was occupied for only two years, a new town took root around it. No fort ever existed here, yet the town became known as Fort Collins. The site of the prior camp is now home to Old Fort Collins Heritage Park as well as a handful of other establishments.
Come learn about the heritage area at our interpretive kiosk before you make your way along the Poudre River Trail to the whitewater park just a quarter mile Northwest.

Picnic Rock Natural Area
Just 2.8 miles from the canyon's entrance, Picnic rock serves as a gateway to the Cache la Poudre River. During the spring and summer months, watch boaters float by as you walk along the river's edge, or stop for lunch at one of the many picnic areas. Gazing across the canyon, you will see picnic rock’s own climbing crag, as well as the vestiges of the 2004 wildfire burn scar by the same name.
From picnic rock, it’s less than 3 miles to Gateway Natural Area, another great option for experiencing the Poudre Canyon without straying too far from the city.

Pleasant Valley School House
The only remaining stone one-room schoolhouse in Larimer County sits on the Noosa Yoghurt and Morning Fresh Dairy campus in Bellvue, Colorado. The Pleasant Valley Schoolhouse was built in 1879 to serve the children of local farmers and ranchers. The schoolhouse is currently part of the scheduled tours of Morning Fresh Dairy. A one acre fenced, off-leach dog park. The dog park is open during daylight hours only. The Town of Windsor requests that you follow the rules of the dog park and properly dispose of your pup’s waste.
Poudre River Whitewater Park
Just North of Old Town, this manufactured whitewater park celebrates the convergence of water in industry, agriculture, and recreation. The whitewater park provides kayakers, tubers, and even river surfers the opportunity to experience all the Poudre has to offer. Strauss Cabin
Nestled between The Cache la Poudre River and Rigden Reservoir, this historic cabin was one of the earliest log structures built in Colorado. Constructed by George Strauss, in 1864, this homestead stood the test of time for roughly 100 years. It was restored in 1997 only to be burned down by arsonists in 1999. Today, you can see the stone edifice and footprint of where the building once stood.
While visiting Strauss Cabin, make sure to check out the Council Tree, just a short walk to the North of the Strauss Cabin remains.

Watson Lake
Watson Lake, a Colorado wildlife area, is just far enough out of town to be the serene escape you are looking for. Bring a cooler of drinks and spend the day fishing or bird watching. This manufactured lake provides an ideal habitat for golden eagles, White-throated Swifts, and Canyon Wrens, who are known to nest on the bluffs above the lake. Complete with picnic tables and river access, Watson Lake is an easy place to spend another beautiful Colorado day.

The buildings of the Museum include Windsor's 1886 Train Depot, one-room schoolhouse, a 1900 farm house, sugar beet laborers' quarters known as a beet shack, and a building historically used as a house of prayer. The Windsor History Museum is open during the summer months Fridays-Sundays, but a self-guided tour, "Windsor Through the Windows" is accessible year round.
